Japan’s former prime minister Shinzo Abe was rushed to hospital Friday after reportedly being shot during a campaign speech in the western city of Nara, local media reported.

Kyodo News and public broadcaster NHK said witnesses heard a gunshot, followed by Abe collapsing to the ground bleeding.

The news outlets said a man suspected to be the shooter was taken into custody.

Reports differed over whether Abe was shot in the chest or neck.

Kyodo said Abe was unconscious and not showing vital signs, and appeared to be in cardiac arrest. Local outlet Jiji also reported Abe was unconscious, citing members of the incumbent Liberal Democratic Party.

Abe was first elected prime minister of Japan in 2006, but resigned one year later due to a medical issue. He later recovered and was elected again in 2012.

He then led the country until 2020, when he stepped down a second time for health reasons.
