U Ye Min Oo, the former Yangon Region finance minister who was ousted in last year’s coup, was given 15 years in prison on five counts of corruption on Monday at a junta court in Naypyitaw Prison.
The regime accused U Ye Min Oo of handing out corrupt loans to businesses when he chaired the Naypyitaw Development Bank. He was given three years for each charge.
A source told The Irrawaddy that U Ye Min Oo would appeal.
He faces other corruption charges and a charge under Article 409 of the Penal Code for a criminal breach of trust with up to life imprisonment.
U Ye Min Oo was detained in Yangon the day after the Feb. 1 coup. He was tortured badly during interrogation and his ribs were broken. He recovered after receiving medical treatment, said a source.
Under the National League for Democracy government, U Ye Min Oo also served as deputy Naypyitaw mayor and Yangon minister for planning and finance. He was elected to the Yangon regional parliament for Dagon Township in 2020 and was widely tipped to become the region’s chief minister.
